West Brom were finding life very difficult playing in the second tier of English football during the 1994 – 1995 season as they could only manager a disappointing 19th place finish in the league as they ere involved in a relegation battle at the end of the season. The Albion suffered a humiliating 1-0 defeat against Hereford in the first round of the league cup which was followed by an early third round exit in the FA Cup, suffering defeat against Premiership outfit, Coventry City.
The 1995 – 1996 league season saw West Brom improve in the first division, finishing the season off in a very respectful 11th position. They suffered elimination out of the FA cup in the third round as they were part of a thrilling encounter against Crewe Alexandra, a match that they ended up losing 4-3. The Albion suffered more disappointment in the domestic cup competition during the 1996 – 97 season as they crashed out of the league cup in the first round as they suffered defeat against Colchester unite din the competition. West Brom could also only manage a 16th position finish in the league. It was a campaign that saw Paul Peschisolido play in incredible form for Albion as he went of at the end of the following season to Fulham in a deal valued more at £1 million.
West Brom reached the fourth round of the FA Cup during the 1997 – 1998 campaign, the furthest round they had in over eight years, however they suffered a 4-0 defeat against fellow Midlands club, Aston Villa. They improved their league finish as they enjoyed a decent 10th position finish.
