The 1990 – 1991 season proved to be a debacle for West Bromwich Albion in what was their worst campaign in the history of the club as they suffered relegation to the third division finishing the campaign off in 23rd position. It was a season that also saw West Brom suffer humiliation in the FA cup as they lost to non league football club, Woking, in the third round of the FA Cup, a result that proved to be one of the biggest shocks in the history of the FA Cup competition. West Brom did not adjust to life in the third division well during the 1991 – 1992 campaign and could only manage a seventh position finish, narrowly missing out on a play off birth at the end of the season. West Brom crashed out of the FA Cup in the second round; it proved to be the earliest round they were knocked out in an FA Cup competition in the history of the club as they suffered defeat against Leyton orient.
The Albion managed to find promotion at the end of the 1992 – 1993 season via the play off final. Andy Hunt scored the winning goal for Albion in the play off final played at Wembley stadium. Their return to the second tier of English football proved to be a shaky one for Albion as they narrowly escaped relegation back down as they finished the season off in 21st place. Stuart Naylor proved to be a revelation in goal through out the 1993 -94 season for West Brom.
