The 1960 – 1961 league campaign proved to be the last one that saw Gordon Clarke in charge at the club and Albion endured a decent season in the top flight as they finished off the campaign in tenth position. They did however suffer an embarrassing 3-1 defeat against Lincoln City in the third round of the FA Cup. Archie Macaulay took over the managerial post at the start of the 1961 – 1962 campaign and Albion made a small improvement in the league as they finished the campaign off in a very respectable ninth place. They also reached the fifth round of the FA Cup, however suffered defeat against Tottenham Hotspur in the last sixteen of the competition.
Jimmy Hagan took over the post as West Brom manager in 1963 and that was a year which was most notable for the emergence of Tony brown making his debut for West Brom. He went on to play for Albion in a career spanning for 17 years and to this day is the record goal scorer with 218 league goals scored for the club. For much of the time between 1963 and 1965, West Brom hovered around mid table in the first division.
