West Brom FC>West Bromwich Albion Managers

Bryan Robson
As a player, Robson was arguably England’s finest player during the 1980’s. He was capped on over ninety times for the England football team and was captain for almost 6 years. He also was incredible while playing for Manchester United over the years. In the summer of 1994, ‘Robbo’ was named as the Middlesbrough ‘player- manager’ and did a great job at the club. He went on to play for the club until 1997. He brought in some great players into the club during his time in charge, including, Juninho, Paul Gascoigne, Paul Merson and Fabrizio Ravanelli. He took Middlesbrough to 3 domestic cup finals. He left the post in the middle of the 2000-01 season and later on managed West Brom, a club he kept in the premier league at the end of the 2004-05 season, also known as the ‘great escape.’

Alan Ashman

In the year 1967, Ashman was installed as the new manager of West Brom and his time at the midlands club was very successful. He helped them win the FA Cup in 1968 after a fine cup run. In 1971 he moved back to Carlisle and then went on to manage Workington and Walsall.

Ron Atkinson

After a successful era in charge of West Brom, Atkinson was named manager of Manchester united in 1981. Atkinson’s first major trophy came with victory over Brighton in the 1983 FA Cup final; despite it having to come from a re match. United and Atkinson were unlucky the following campaign not to win the European Cup winners cup as they crashed out in the semi- finals.
In 1985, he was in charge at Manchester United once again to FA Cup victory, this time over Everton. He left the post in 1986 and moved back in charge of West Brom. Atkinson had spells in charge Sheffield Wednesday, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest afterwards.

Brian Talbot

After enjoying a successful playing career for West Bromwich Albion, Talbot was installed as the new manager of the club in the year 1988; however the club was disappointing for several seasons under him despite doing a fine job at the club. He was player manager at the beginning of his reign and left the post in 1991.

Denis Smith
Smith was manager at Sunderland in the year 1987 and helped them gain promotion from the third division and in to the top flight, he left the managerial post at Sunderland in December 1991 and later on became manager of Bristol City in 1993. He was installed as the new manager at West Brom in 1997 and helped Albion ensure division one status for two consecutive seasons before leaving the job in 1999 after 18 months in charge at the club.
